I’m behind on posting due to being so busy, so the first two of these photos are a couple of weeks old, the last one is newer. I filled the stump bed with mixed colors of coleus this year (some I grew from seed), and they are thriving. We’ve had quite a few bad storms lately, with hail and wind, so some of them now have a few holes in the leaves, but all are growing well and are very pretty. I love the way this flower bed looks this year!

You can see a little of the hail damage in this one.

Beautiful coleus bed. I swear, I cannot seem to grow coleus well. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! Do you have to continually pinch it back? Mine just grow and flower and no matter how often I remove the flowers, they just keep flowers.
Hi Jim,
Thanks. I pinch mine back every couple of weeks or so, so not too often. They do get flower buds but I just clip them out when I’m deadheading the rest of the garden. The bed in this post gets a few hours of morning sun and then dappled sun during the afternoon hours, shade in the evening — I think getting a little sun helps them to grow big and lush. I have some on the full-shade side of the gazebo and they’re nowhere near as thick as these are, theyr’e tall and spindly.
Coleus are gorgeous, so you must keep trying! :-)

You know what I have to do, is just fine them “full grown” and plop them in the ground! DONE! My shade garden needs to be *bumped up* a LOT and some big lush leafy coleus could do the trick.
Absolutely, Jim, buy them potted and already bushy and they would look great in your shade garden!
Your Coleus bed looks just gorgeous, Sherry.
I had planted some in a container but with only a little success.
I guess the spot I placed them was too much of our hot sun.
I am going to plant a few in the ground next year when I will redo and redesign my garden.
Thanks, PJ. I find they do better with a few hours of morning sun, a regular fertilizing every week or so and a good deep watering when needed. I use them everywhere in my gardens and just love them.
Thanks for commenting,
Sherry
