All my flower beds are mixed plantings, cottage garden style, and I enjoy mixing annuals and perennials together. Some years the results are better than others. :) One of my favorites this year was when the dark purple Japanese Irises, pink roses, and yellow daylilies all bloomed together along the fence. My yellow irises and bluebells bloomed together and were exceptionally pretty as well. I also really liked the dark purple fountain grass with the hot pink sunpatiens. Here are more plant combinations, colors and textures, that were pleasing to me this year. Click on any photo to enlarge.

DSCF5197 That’s a beautiful stand of celosia.
Your plants in every picture are so lush and healthy. I see no evidence of insect damage on any of them.
DSCF5670 This is a lovely vignette.
DSCF4846 I like coleus very much. Next year I plan to plant only one to a large pot. They usually crowd out the other annuals in there anyway. For a large punch of color they can’t beat.
DSCF4557 I’ve never had much luck with torenia. Yours is lush and full of blooms!
Thank you anonymous, for your comments on the photos. Oh I have plenty of insect damage on many of my plants, especially slug damage, but the celosia doesn’t have any pests that I’ve seen.
The torenia seems to do well here in mostly shade and dry soil. It self seeds a lot too, so I always have plenty of them everywhere by fall.
You’re right that coleus usually crowds out anything else in a pot. I love them too, and they really can’t be beat for all season color.
