I first saw these irises in a photo on a blog last year. I had never seen this type of iris before and absolutely loved them. I couldn’t find them locally, so looked online at several places. I finally found them at two different online nurseries and ordered nine of them (three different varieties) in very early spring of last year. I planted the bare roots in a sunny spot near the fence in the front bed. I had lots of foliage last year, but as expected, no blooms. This spring however, they have reached full height and are all in bloom. These are beautiful flowers! These beardless irises are very tall at 36 to 48 inches, and the spectacular flowers are very large and showy. They like moist, acidic soil in full sun to part shade. The foliage is softer, thicker and more grassy than that of other types of irises. I love these! According to online sources, bloom time is normally late June to early July, but as is most everything in my yard this year, these are blooming early. Click on any photo to view larger.

Wow, you can’t beat those for a big punch of color! And the clump will only grow over the years. I need more irises, especially all the non german bearded ones.
Jim, these are my new favorite irises. Big and gorgeous! I love that these are tall and they -don’t- have to be staked. Yes, the clump will (hopefully) grow over the years. I’m already surprised at the growth from these bare-root clumps I planted last year.
Hi Sherry, Your iris are absolutely beautiful! I especially love your Freckled Geisha! May I ask where you purchased this one? Are you still growing Japanese Iris?
take a look at my Japanese Iris in bloom, my recent post
Michael :)
Hi Michael,
Thanks :) I got the Freckled Geisha a few years ago at http://www.bulbsdirect.com , they had them in early spring. Yes, I’m definitely still growing Japanese Iris, they’re in full bloom right now and I’m still loving them. I got a new one (new to me) this year, it’s pink and I’m looking forward to seeing it bloom in years to come. My main clump needs dividing this year, so I’ll probably spread them around all over my garden this summer. :)
I did look at your post, and yours are gorgeous! I love your Ocean Mist, and also the white and purple — they’re all so pretty. :)
Thanks for visiting,
Sherry
Hi Sherry! Beautiful Iris! One of my favorite flowers. Unfortunately due to the last frost we had, none of my flowers are their prettiest this year. Hopefully next summer they will be back to their glory! See ya tomorrow if all goes well, I have a box of apples for you. :)
Hi Deborah,
I planted a lot more Japanese Irises this fall, so I’m looking forward to more of these blooms. No frost here at all yet so there’s still a lot of flowers in my garden, they’re just getting covered by falling poplar leaves. :)
see ya soon,
Sherry
