Signs of spring
February 5, 2008 by Sherry
|We’ve had several days of very warm temperatures, and lots of much-needed rain over the past couple of weeks. Today, the temps were in the 70s and I have a serious case of spring fever! I took a walk around the yard, and it seems that the garden also has spring fever… this isn’t a good thing, as we’re sure to have cold temps again and I’m afraid everything will be frozen and ruined.
The giant allium clumps have not only sprouted, many of them are several inches tall already.
Daffodils have sprouted all over the yard and at the edge of the woods. Some are several inches tall and the flower buds are visible. I can see the yellow color in some of them already!
Clumps of tulips have also sprouted, the larger variety as well as the dwarfs in the front bed, and some of their flower buds are also visible.
The dogwood trees have all budded out in the woods and in the yard, and the trees are filled with flower buds.
The flowering quince bush I have at the edge of the woods is filled with buds and showing tiny leaves already.
Several clumps of wild onions, 3 or 4 inches tall, are growing in the secret garden. I love these cheerful little clumps of green and instead of pulling them up, as they are weeds here, I always leave them among the beds for their color and texture.
The new clump of butterfly blue scabiosa I planted late last fall at the edge of the secret garden bed has sprouted up and already has several leaves, and is actively growing. I really don’t think this clump has ever stopped growing. I had covered it with bark mulch and leaves, but it has pushed up through that now.
Even the bee balm has already sprouted in the lower bed! There are many clumps already up and growing. It’s way too early for this.
All my rose bushes have sprouted out and are showing tiny clumps of leaves.
These photos were taken in and around the yard today. Click any photo for a larger version.
Are you seeing signs of spring in your area?
With all the rain and the warm, sunny weather lately, the garden is impatient.. and I am also. I’m tired of dreary gray weather and I’m so ready for warm weather and yes, even yard work, but I’m afraid it’s a little too early for all these signs of spring!
