Lantana seems fitting for this month, the bright orange, pink, yellow, and reddish flowers just seem so August.
Did you know these plants are extremely invasive and considered noxious weeds in some parts of Australia, Asia, and Africa? They are also naturalized in some frost-free areas of the US, and are called “ham and eggs”. While I do think the flowers are pretty and they do attract lots of butterflies, and the plants seem to be very drought and heat and bug tolerant, this is not one of my favorite flowers…I just don’t like it very much for some reason. It is one of my husband’s favorite flowers though.. so right now we have two of these in hanging pots near the steps.
I’ve read that the berries (and maybe even the entire plant) are poisonous to animals and birds and that the leaves and stems can cause hives in people. So, even though the bluish colored berries are pretty, I snip off the flowers before they form, just in case. The plants are thriving right now in hanging pots in full sun and don’t seem to need much attention, they’re very colorful and interesting and easy to grow, but I just don’t think I’ll have these flowers again next year. I read today on a gardening website that there is no in-between with these plants, people either love them or hate them. I don’t love them. :)
