In an unsurprising finish to a show that ran a few minutes over the allotted two hours, Jordin Sparks is the new American Idol. Overall, I didn’t enjoy this finale as much as last year’s, and I’m glad it’s over. Lots of guests, and not much stage time for this year’s contestants.
-The show opened with Blake and Jordin singing a duet of “I Saw Her Standing There”.
–Gwen Stefani live from where ever she’s at on tour.
–Kelly Clarkson performed her new single “Never Again”.
–Top 6 guys medley with Smokey Robinson, including “Ooh Baby Baby,”, and “Being With You”.
-Blake beatboxed with Doug E. Fresh.
–Top 6 girls medley with Gladys Knight.
–Tony Bennett performs.
–Melinda Doolittle sang with gospel artists Bebe and Cece Winans.
The second hour of the show opened with Ryan Seacrest presenting Blake and Jordin with keys to their new Ford Mustangs.
–Carrie Underwood performed “Stand By You”. She was great, as usual.
–Clive Davis finally made an appearance, and gave a review of various Idol successes, including Chris Daughtry’s and Kelly Clarkson’s awesome sales, Jennifer Hudson’s Academy Award, Fantasia’s Broadway success and her new album; and then gave props to Carrie Underwood for her many awards and her 6-times platinum debut album.
–African Children’s Choir performed.
–Sanjaya performed “You Really Got Me”, with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. Joe Perry was awesome.
–Green Day performed John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero”.
–Taylor Hicks performed his new single “Heaven Knows”.
-Jordin performed a duet with Reuben Studdard.
–Bette Midler sang “The Wind Beneath My Wings”.
–Sgt. Peppers medley with Joe Perry on guitar, Kelly, Carrie, Taylor, Reuben, and the Top 12.
Interspersed throughout the show, Ryan gave out “Golden Idol Awards”, to miscellaneous people from the auditions. I really dislike this part of the show, I think it’s silly, and uses up too much time.
Hearing the Top 12 sing again, I have to wonder why Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey didn’t go further than they did. They both sounded great, as did Melinda and Lakisha with Gladys Knight. Once again, in my opinion, this season proves that it is not a singing contest, but a popularity contest.
After 74 million votes, Jordin wins and gave an emotional performance of “This is My Now”, amidst the confetti falling in the Kodak Theatre… and another season is over. Good luck to Jordin, and to all the contestants. Tickets are on sale now for the summer American Idol Live Tour ’07, which opens July 6.
