salvia bloomsIt is so hot and humid here it’s ridiculous, 85% humidity right now at midnight. It is already feeling like summer and it seems as if everything is blooming a little early this year — the May Night salvia is even blooming (photo at left)! The Agastache I started from seed indoors is already blooming and the established clumps in the gazebo flower bed are in bud. I also have Profusion Zinnias, Dwarf Phlox, Annual Bachelor’s Button, and Cuphea in bloom still in flats I just took out from under the lights indoors. I have finally gotten most of them moved out of the house, haven’t gotten them all planted yet though. We have had lots of rain and storms for the past two weeks, so between the showers and storms and working on the new slope bed, I have been planting a few things each day and slowly but surely I’m getting things done this spring. Here are some photos I have taken around the yard over the past week or so. Click to view larger versions.

daffs lining the pathOur temperature today was in the 90s! We had to turn on the ac.. ridiculous this early in the year. Here are a few more photos of the tulips and the new bed I’m working on. The tulips are so pretty this year and I want to remember them… if this heat keeps up they probably won’t last very long.

The tulips and other spring flowers are above and along the path surrounding part of the new flower bed. This bed is above the gazebo at the edge of the woods, the path continues down and around the gazebo, connecting to the secret garden flower bed. The mulched area will be filled with mostly summer perennials.

creek in secret gardenAfter getting 3 or 4 inches of rain over this past weekend, we have had two more days and a couple more inches of rain this week. All this rain has filled the streams in the mountains, and the little creek in the Secret Garden is overflowing. After the downpours finally stopped early this evening, I walked around a bit in the garden and found a few more flowers, including forsythia shrubs, daffodils and hyacinths. A few of the miniature irises are still blooming as well as a few crocus. Tulips are several inches tall, as are the alliums and other spring bulbs and the daylilies. I’m hoping that the rains will stop now so I can get the beds cleaned out and some fresh mulch put down. I’m ready for the gardening season to begin!
