We have had SO many hummingbirds this summer in my garden, so many that I have put out five feeders and filled them numerous times over the past few months. I got a small new feeder on a low ground stake for the slope bed a few weeks ago, and have enjoyed watching them from the gazebo. It is a myth that if you leave your feeders up in fall, it will keep them from migrating. They need feeding more than ever right now as they prepare for their long southward flight. I’ll miss seeing these little jewels when they leave.

I LOVE the hummingbirds. We’ve had *some* but certainly not frequently. It’s something that continually catches me by surprise. Like, “did I just see what I thought I saw?” I want to plant more monarda but don’t want to continually have to keep tabs on its spread. But it’s so pretty!
Hi Jim,
They do love the bee balm. It’s not so hard to keep it contained, it does spread but is pretty easy to pull up unwanted plants. Or, you could put out a feeder? I’ll bet you would see many more if you did.
I’m going to miss watching the hummingbirds when they leave!
Sherry,
We have a moderate amount of hummimngbirds here in the desert. They are fascinating to watch. I don’t put out any feeders because of all the wild animals. There is lots of competition for food and water which are scarce.
Hi Lana,
TThey sure are fascinating to watch. Speaking of competition, I do wish they wouldn’t fight so much. It seems like there’s always one particular hummingbird that guards each feeder, and zooms at any others that come near!

I love hummers. I don’t put out feeders for them bec. our neighborhood has a million cats. I don’t want them here if it puts them at risk. I so enjoyed your photos. It looks like a hummingbird paradise.
I love them too, Christine. Not seeing as many now, I guess they’re all leaving on their long trip farther south.
