The tulips are mostly all in bloom right now. They’re so pretty this year! (I’m always surprised that so many of them survive what with the digging devil squirrels here. The chicken wire helps!) There are still a few later blooming varieties to come as well. I’m hoping they will get to bloom– with our 85 degree temps and sticky humidity this past week, it feels more like summer than spring. I have been busy doing yard work, moving and planting and continuing to work on the new flower bed area near the gazebo. I have a huge number of plants inside the house that I need to get out soon. I’m hoping to get around to doing that this coming week. We had wicked storms here this week, tornado watches and high winds. An all night power outage on Monday night and a few limbs down is all the damage done here though.
Here are a few photos taken this past week of some of the many tulips I have blooming now. Click on any to view larger.

So pretty to see! I wish I could have them but, alas, it would be a colossal waste of money, what with the deer and voles.
Thanks, Jim. I enjoy them too.
Sorry you have a deer problem! The deer aren’t too bad here (we have a dog and he keeps them away from the yard), but the squirrels are the big problem here.. I go back and forth between hating them and thinking they’re cute. :) I cover my bulbs with chicken wire and then cover that with mulch in the fall and leave it until they are a few inches high in the spring, and that has protected them pretty well for the past couple of years.
I swear our dog invites the deer into the yard so he can play with them. They say dog pee and poop deter deer. Nope, not in my neck of the woods.
I should actually try the chicken wire. It will do nothing for voles but maybe I can put crushed shells or some crushed rock in the soil to deter them from digging into the tulip area. It’s worth a try!
Jim, I’m laughing out loud at your dog playing with the deer! :)
The chicken wire does work well, and it’s hidden with a thin layer of bark throughout the fall and winter anyway so you won’t see it.
Maybe get a cat to try and get rid of the voles? :)
The digging squirrels are what drive me crazy here!
Ah. beautiful tulips. I love the Pink Impressions. Not many tulips around here in the desert, except in pots in the grocery. We don’t have deer here, just coyotes and javelina. When I lived in Virginia, I had plenty of tulips and deer.
Thank you, Lana. The Pink Impressions are my favorites as well. We have plenty of deer here too (and coyotes), I see them every now and then but since it’s out in the middle of the woods, I guess they have plenty to eat without bothering the tulips.. lol. I hope so anyway.
(I have been to VA, such a pretty place.)
