One of my favorite annuals, coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides) is very easy to grow, easy to propagate and comes in dozens and dozens of colorful varieties. I usually prune mine several times throughout the growing season to keep them bushy, and the cuttings root easily. Here are a few that I’m growing in my garden this year, including the chartreuse coleus that I have around my bird bath in the new stump flower bed. These plants are huge now!

I LOVE your coleus (colei??) and wonder where you get such great ones. Last year I actually grew some from seed and they were easy and did great. This year: failure. They look great with the coneflower.
Hi Sara,
I usually grow mine from seed as well, this year though I think I bought every one of these at lowe’s. I’m sorry you didn’t have good luck with yours this year! Next year’s garden is always the best one though isn’t it? :) That’s always my thinking anyway.
Thanks for visiting.
I Loooooove coleus! WE have tons of coleus lining one of our shade gardens, Denny wanted them badly. I *thought* you might need to pinch them to bush out a bit but I didn’t know. When did you plant yours for them to get that big???
Jim,
Me too, they’ve always been one of my favorite plants and I especially love the newer varieties that are sun tolerant. Yes, definitely pinch them back and they will get bushier. I pinch mine every couple of weeks. I planted all of these in April, the cuttings throughout the season. The chartreuse ones are very fast growing and huge.
Thanks for visiting.
For some reason, I didn’t realize this was an annual! Thanks for the botanical lesson. So very pretty.
Christine, yes annual. I kinda wish they were perennials, but at least I get to choose different ones every year. :)
