We have had thunderstorms here all day for the past two days, and during a lull in the rains I took a walk through the yard and noticed that the Peacock Orchids (Gladiolus callianthus), also known as Fragrant Gladiolus or Sword Lilies, are blooming. These are very fragrant and unique flowers, and the tall, spiky foliage is nice all season. I have several clumps of these perennial bulbs in my rock wall flower beds. The clumps spread somewhat and have more flowers each year.

Christine, according to davesgarden.com, they are hardly only in zones 7 through zone 11 so it may be too cold in your area. If so, you could grow them in containers and lift the bulbs before winter.
