I had a chance to get very close to this Gray Petaltail (Tachopteryx thoreyi) dragonfly yesterday as it was sitting in the sunshine on my deck for a long while. These are large gray and black dragonflies and are endangered in many areas. According to my Kaufman insect field guide, these are primitive dragonflies with only ten surviving species in the world — the Black Petaltail found in northwestern bogs and this Gray Petaltail. These dragonflies live around springs and seeps in forest areas. Here are just two of the many photos I took of this dragonfly, click to enlarge and see the details.
