Rose of Sharon shrubs

The rose of sharon shrubs (Hibiscus syriacus) are still in full bloom right now. I have many of these shrubs, in pink, white, and a couple shades of purple. Even though the Japanese Beetles came through in droves and did some damage to them, they are still pretty this year. These shrubs can get up to 12′ tall, attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and are extremely easy to grow. They can even be a little invasive if not pruned right after they finish blooming. If the seed pods are allowed to ripen, there will be a gazillion small ones the following year… I’m not always diligent in pruning them and spend a lot of time in the spring pulling up the small seedlings. :)

When I was a little girl, everyone had thse, and I didn’t like them. I don’t know why because they are so beautiful. Very nice pictures!

    Hi Louise,

We always had them around when I was a kid too. Now, I go back and forth between loving them and hating them.. lol They’re not much to look at except for when they’re in bloom.
