American Idol, top 8 girls performed songs from the 80s tonite.
-
Asia’h Epperson - “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” This was a good performance from Asia’h tonite, I enjoyed it. Not sure I’ll remember it tomorrow though. Randy said it was hot, Paula said she nailed it. Simon wasn’t quite as enthusiastic, and called the performance “second-rate Whitney Houston”. He said she had trouble hitting the big notes.
-
Kady Malloy - “Who Wants to Live Forever” For the first time, I actually liked Kady’s performance. She’s no Freddy Mercury, but I thought she did okay on this. In my opinion, this was her best performance to date. Randy said it was an interesting song choice and she did a pretty good job, especially on the big notes. Paula said it was her best performance yet. Simon said although it was better than last week, he’s still having issues with Kady’s “massive lack of personality”. He said she was too robotic, too gloomy, and that she may be in trouble this week.
-
Amanda Overmyer - “I Hate Myself For Loving You” I thought her voice sounded a little shaky and weak at first, but overall it was pretty good. This is definitely the type of song she’s good at. I like her Janis Joplin style, but I’m not sure how versatile she is (or has to be). She’s different, and she stands out among the others. I hope she makes it through. Randy said it was well done, Paula said she picked the right song this time, and Simon loved it. Simon called it fantastic, said she nailed it, and that it was his favorite performance by a girl so far in the competition. At the end of the show, he said again that it was his favorite of the night.
-
Carly Smithson - “I Drove All Night” This was a great performance. I loved it. She has a great voice, and I think this was definitely one of the best of the night. Randy said it was very, very good. Paula said she was like a “dependable dog”, totally into her niche. Simon said that once again, she didn’t choose the right song. He said she was a million times better than the song.
-
Kristy Lee Cook - “Faithfully” She made the song sound country. I didn’t like it. She’s forgettable. None of her performances have been memorable to me. Randy said it was cool that she put a country lilt to this great Journey song. Paula said it could be a hit for Kristy Lee today, in country music. Simon said it was forgettable, and that he could see her finishing in tenth place at best.
-
Ramiele Malubay - “Against All Odds” I like Ramiele, but for the second week in a row, I was disappointed with her performance. She sounded shaky and out of tune. Randy said it was pretty good, a big song with big vocals, and that she has mad vocal skills but lacks confidence. Paula said she has an innocent and pure voice with a lot of texture. After a lot of incoherence, Paula finally says Ramiele deserves to be in the Top 12. Simon thought it was good but a little old fashioned and predictable. He said he wasn’t jumping out of his chair for it.
-
Brooke White - “Love is a Battlefield” This was the best performance of the night for me. She did a very nice, acoustic version of the song. I love her easy style, and could definitely see buying and listening to a cd by her. Randy and Paula said it was good, Paula said it was a wise song choice, very pure, but she wished Brooke had incorporated the band into the performance more. Simon completely disagreed with Paula (so do I), and said it worked because she made it acoustic and different. He loved her, and said that this was a great performance by her for the second week in a row.
-
Syesha Mercado - “Saving All My Love For You” Yet another Whitney Houston song.. it was a good performance and Syesha has a nice voice, but nothing stood out to me. Boring. Randy said it was good, Paula called it sophisticated and lovely, and Simon said it was predictable but good. All three judges agreed that she is good enough to get through to the Top 12.

Who were your favorites tonite? Who will go home this week?
Once again, I preferred the guys to the girls this week. My rankings for tonite, best to worst: 1. Brooke White, 2. Carly Smithson, 3. Amanda Overmyer, 4. (surprisingly) Kady Malloy, 5. Asia’h Epperson, 6. Syesha Mercado, 7. Ramiele Malubay, 8. Kristy Lee Cook.
I am so tired of Whitney Houston songs… I voted for Brooke and Carly tonite, no one else compelled me to pick up the phone. The only thing that would surprise me in the results this week is if Brooke and/or Carly didn’t make the Top 12…
The Top 12! will be revealed tomorrow night on the results show, Fox, 8pm.
