New in the garden, in September, Blue Mist Shrub, Asters, Helenium. Click any photo to enlarge.
The flower beds are beginning to look like jungles now, and the containers are all overflowing with flowers and foliage. This is always the time of year that I start wondering whether I could try and drag in some of my containers and hanging baskets in a few weeks, and maybe try and overwinter some of the annuals.. but, I know that I’ll neglect to water them,
the plants will dry out in the heated dry air in the house, leaves and flowers will be dropping off of them, and by Christmas I’ll be tired of them.. sigh.. and next year, I’ll want to start again with fresh annuals anyway. With several more weeks before cooler weather, I’ll just continue to water and deadhead them all. That, along with working on the second phase of the secret garden, keeps me busy right now, and the days are still hot and sticky. And, I’ve already made a couple (or three) orders for plants and bulbs for fall planting. I’m anticipating next year already.. lol
Here are two of my large containers, both filled with mixed annuals. The first photo shows one of the containers the day I planted it, on May 5th. The second photo shows the same container on July 19th. The larger photo shows the container today, September 2nd. (same container, different bench) I can’t believe these plants have done so well in these containers, they are overflowing with flowers and foliage. (Click any photo to enlarge.)
Here’s the second large container, shown May 5th on the day it was planted, then on July 19th, and the larger photo was taken today, September 2nd. I’m really going to hate seeing the frost kill all these plants. I’ll definitely be using these containers again next year. I’m already thinking about what I might plant in them for next summer. :-)

The containers are nice, but I think you must have two green thumbs. I love the variety of color.

I should show a picture of one of my planters. It has fizzled to nothing but a few verbenas - even the geraniums croaked. LOL! It’s been so hot and dry.
Like you, I have visions of next spring. Your plants are fantastic and healthy! I’m kind of jealous :o)

Thanks Mary. So sorry about your containers and all the plants you have lost! I know what you mean about hot and dry. I’ve had to water these containers sometimes twice a day for the last few weeks. I’ve had several things to die in the flower beds though, and the shrubs and trees are suffering greatly from lack of water. I heard on the local news last night that we are almost 12 inches below normal rainfall for the year — and I know your area is suffering also. Let’s hope we start getting normal rainfall soon, and next spring will be a better time for plants!

You are 12 inches below? I think we are 10 inches below. It will take a week-long tropical storm for us to catch up!

Mary, we are officially 11.67 inches below normal rainfall for the year, for our county. It definitely would take a tropical storm to catch up! My husband said the other day that it would probably take a week of rain just to wet the ground a few inches down.. -surely- we will start getting some rain soon, both our areas. Just normal rainfall would be good, it doesn’t even have to be a tropical storm! lol
