Dog treats at wal-mart tainted with melamine

In July, Wal-mart received complaints from customers that two specific brands of dog treats, Chicken Jerky Strips from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky from Shanghai Bestro Trading, had made their dogs sick. The company began testing the products in question, and their tests have revealed the presence of melamine in these products. This is the same chemical that was found in so many dog and cat food products earlier this year, and resulted in the largest petfood recall in history. Although there isn’t yet an official recall, Wal-mart has pulled the two dog treat products from their shelves. Further tests will be completed, and U.S. customers are advised to stop feeding their dogs these products, and to return the products to wal-mart for a refund.

Seems as if everything is being pulled from the shelves - from dog food and treat to childrens’ toys. Scary. I had not heard about the jerky treats. I had tried Purina Beneful for my dogs a few months ago - thinking after eating the same food for many years they would like a change. Then I heard the food was causing kidney failure…

    Is anything safe?

    Hi Mary,

I know, it’s very scary, and frustrating too! We had switched to Purina Dog Chow right before the first recall began, and so thank goodness we weren’t affected by it. I did have some of the canned Alpo and the treats though, but threw them out as soon as I heard about the recall (none of our dogs got sick). It’s very scary, not knowing which food is safe anymore. I’m leery of buying any brand of dog treats after this latest happening.
