A blue jay at one of my birdfeeders. I watched this blue jay and her mate chase away a black snake that was trying to get to their nest of babies, high up in a mulberry tree near the birdfeeder. One blue jay stood guard at the nest, while the other flew at the black snake again and again, pecking and squawking at him as he tried to go back down the tree. The snake got away. Brave birds to take on a snake to protect their babies!
I am sorry to hear about the spider mites on your marigold. Hopefully it will recover and go back to its former glory.

Yes, they were brave, they were determined that the snake was not going to get at their babies! lol
Oh, the spider mites have ruined the potted marigold plants. I’ve cut back the plants and sprayed with the insecticidal soap, but I’m not sure if they will recover. I’ve never had a problem with these things before.. terrible pests!

Great photo of a great bird.
My cat caught one today and stunned till I had to rescue it and move it to safety. That bird in my hands was so fearless, gazing at me without struggling, chirping or shaking, not the least hint of fear in it. I think it was resolved to die with dignity. My favorite bird is now the blue jay.
(I hope you don’t mind if I purloined your photo for my blog (see link). It was the only one I could find that really captured that fearless Look in the blue jay I encountered.)

Thanks Curtis, I’m glad you liked the photo and found it captured what you were looking for in your blog.
I know what you mean about cats, mine do the same thing, and although I don’t like it and try to prevent it when I can, it is their nature.
The blue jays are fearless birds! I watched those two bravely chase away the snake, and they successfully prevented it from getting at their babies. They are beautiful birds.
